Below Deck S6 Episode #12

19 December 2018

Ok, we are done with the Ashton episode, it was a story book ending and believe me no one is happier than Ashton, his parents and me. So glad it turned out the way it did. I sleep so much better for it. Doesn’t mean that I don’t relive it and go thru the, what if’s, but I have to put it behind me, learn from it and move forward. So with that being said this is a whole new ball game this week. We have a new dichotomy setting in here. So lets get started.

I’m going to start this week with Josiah. What a treat it has been working with him. Not to say that he doesn’t make mistakes, but at least when he makes one, he steps up to the plate and takes responsibility for it. For example, when he over heard our resident critic Laura making a statement about how she felt that Kate and Josiah didn’t like her, he went back and made mention of it to Kate, who promptly confronted Laura about it. So when Laura mentioned it to Josiah, he immediately did not deflect, shift blame, didn’t make excuses, he simply said that it was his fault for the ensuing situation because he went back and relayed the comment to Kate when he could have waited for a better opportunity and apologized for it.  Its best to discuss those things that are said when drunk……….sober. That my friends, is called character. Well-done Josiah, and I have no issues with your performance on the job front at all. You had a good week IMO.

Kate, I thought you had a good week as well. You are still going back and doing the work that you thought was being done but turns out wasn’t being done properly and you have every right to be disappointed. It’s like I said, if I have to do your work, or babysit you, why do I need you. We all know how I feel about ultimatums, but in this instance coming off another 3rd stew debacle, it’s going to take some thought. Yes, you should have checked her work, its obvious that she does not hold her self to a higher standard at all. She thinks that just OK, is the vibe on board. In what world would she get that impression, considering that her work up to this point is substandard. At any rate I thought you displayed good judgment and you gave better than you got.  And while we are on the subject, lets move right on to Laura.

So Laura, to say that I am not impressed with your behavior or performance would be an understatement. Do I think that you have the talent, and the ability? Oh hell yes you do, you also have the spunk, yup.  But I feel it’s being displayed in all the wrong aspects. You come in like a bull in a china shop, what you don’t sh*^t on you break. You are a 3rd stew. You do not get the right to criticize at all. Do your assigned jobs and tasks, and head down and mouth shut. No one cares how it was done on your last boat. You have the worse case of “Yeah buts” that I have ever seen. Yeah, but on my last boat, we did it this way, yadda yadda yadda. No one, least of all me cares how you did it on your last boat. What you may have been then, is not what you are now. And until you prove that you deserved that title you once held, you are a third stew, nothing more and nothing less.  That was then and this is now. Until you get more stripes, keep your thoughts to yourself, especially when you are talking behind the backs of your superiors and the boat that you currently work on in a derogatory fashion. Where do you get off forming such a damning opinion in 48 hrs? And you have the audacity to come on board to save us from ourselves and “revamp us.” If some one needs to check themselves it is you. If Kate didn’t check your work, you would have embarrassed the whole staff with your shoddy work and attitude. You want respect, get it the old fashioned way, you earn it. You’re a good person; don’t get in your own way by trying so hard to prove it. It will come thru on its own if you just let it. You have enormous potential. Don’t let the pettiness kill all the good you have in you. Just my thoughts and me being me. I still have high hopes for you because of what I see inside you.

Rhylee, whatever am I to do with you. Never have I seen someone with so much potential shoot themselves in the foot so frequently. Don’t you think that it is just as easy when someone interrupts you to say, excuse me, but might I finish what I was saying, rather than saying shut the f*%k up I’m talking, GOT IT. At that point in time, no one is going to listen to what you have to say because you have alienated him or her by being so rude and they no longer care whether you are right or wrong. You just pissed them off by being rude. No one wants to work around some one where they constantly have to walk on eggs because they are afraid you will go off on them. Would you like to work like that? I think not, I also think you are so reactionary because you are trying way too hard to make people like and respect you.  Give people a chance to like you and respect you for you and what you can do, and how you treat others, not because you want to portray the bad ass all the time. The person I think you are isn’t the person I see going off on everyone all the time. In my opinion, you are much better than that. I hope I’m not wrong.

Ashton, it appears you are almost fully recovered and for that I am happy.  I would have missed those chubby little cheeks of yours. Glad to have you back and doing well.  I do think that when you had your conversation with Laura, not sure you did her any favors by giving her the advice you did. I didn’t think she had any right to be upset. /She had already belittled everyone on board with her comments that were no doubt derived from her vast 2.5 years of experience.  She was begging to be put in her place, and was just using you to help verify her position and gain an ally with her condescending remarks which not only reflected on how she felt about Kate, but how she viewed our boat in general and the way we operated it in general.  That included you. If she found it so distasteful, and so far beneath her, why not just leave.  I think you may have been thinking with the wrong head. At any rate pal, so good to have you back. Expecting big things from you.

Wow, Ross, who would have thought that you could get into so much trouble just taking a leak and talking a wee bit of smack with your mate’s?  Was proud of the way you dealt with it the next day though. Worked it out properly when everyone was sober and was thinking with a clear head. I thought you had a good week this week and am proud of the job you are doing as bosun. Keep it up.

Tyler, you are working out quite well. Glad to see someone come on board and not think they are God’s gift to the charter world. You consistently are working, doing your job, not complaining, getting on well with everyone, and might I say, some better than others obviously. You are an asset to the team and I’m glad to have you aboard. You compliment the deck crew well.

Chef, at the risk of sounding redundant, you nailed it again. Well done in the galley sir. I do agree that you are getting mixed signals from Laura, but that one you need to work out on your own. That is definitely not my circus nor my monkeys. That is so far out of my wheelhouse I would not even go there. So keep on keeping on and doing the great things you do in the galley. Well done.

Well, there you have my thoughts one this episode. It appears that we are not done with the crew escapades quite yet so onward we go. So until the next episode, be safe out there and fair winds and following seas.
